[Cohoes, NY] - Last night the Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 received a Grammy Award for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Packaging. The titles of Creative Director, Art Director and Designer are mutually shared amongst Gary Burden, Jenice Heo and Neil Young who collaborated together throughout the design process.
To many, Archives Vol. 1 is about Young’s music, but to die hard fans, along with Burden, Heo and Young himself, the Archives is about the journey that inspired the music over the past decades. To Burden, Heo, and Young, the packaging was as important to the Archives as the music. More than a just a collection of music, the Archives is a memory box of sorts, with a replica of the journal Young kept through the years, with photos, news clippings, and hand written lyrics for Young’s timeless music.
Sustainability advocates, Young and Burden chose to use Mohawk for the journal and the disc jackets. Mohawk’s use of windpower grabbed the team’s attention. “Neil’s music has endured and we wanted the Archive package to stand up to that. And we like knowing that we used a paper that is helping our environment to endure,” says Burden.
