Alternative Energy
Refers to energy sources that are not based on the burning of fossil fuels or the splitting of atoms. For example, solar energy, wind power and hydroelectricity.

Biodegradable
Biodegradable waste is capable of being broken down into non-harmful products by the action of living things such as microorganisms.

Carbon Neutral
Ensuring that net carbon emissions are zero: by counterbalancing carbon released with carbon captured (through photosynthesis by plants used to make biofuels, for example); or by using only renewable energy.

CERES
Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economics is the leading U.S. coalition of environmental, investor, and advocacy groups working together for a sustainable future.

CFPA Certified: The Chlorine Free Products Association
An independent not-for-profit standard-setting organization, certifi es leaders responsibly producing 100% post-consumer papers that create no harmful toxins.

ECF: Elemental Chlorine Free
A term for virgin or recycled paper bleached with alternative chlorine compounds, not elemental chlorine.

Ecologo
Certification from Environment Canada’s Environmental Choice Program, identifies products that consider greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy use and recycling.

Environmental Footprint
A company’s environmental impact determined by the amount of depletable raw materials and non-renewable resources it consumes in making its products, and the quantity of wastes and emissions generated in the process.

Environmentally Sound Manufacturing
Manufacturing processes that are designed to minimize environmental impacts.

ForestEthics
Has adopted a unique method to protect endangered forests. The group educates the public about where wood and paper products come from, while assisting corporations that wish to act responsibly.

FSC: Forest Stewardship Council
This non-profit organization has created a global standard for responsible forestry and chain-of-custody tracking from forest to shelf. An FSC label is an independent guarantee that a product comes from a forest-friendly source. Unisource is Chain-of-Custody Certified by the FSC.

Green-e Certified:
Identifies products made with certified renewable energy, including but not limited to wind power, solar power, low impact hydropower, and biomass.

Green Seal™ Certified
A twin testimonial, it signifies not only that all recycled papers are made with at least 30% post consumer fiber, but that mill processes, including packaging, are environmentally preferable.

ISO 14001
A voluntary, independently certified international standard for environmental management systems used, developed and maintained by the International Organization for Standardization.

PCF: Process Chlorine Free
The CFPA’s mark for recycled paper made with post-consumer waste and unbleached or bleached without chlorine compounds.

PCW: Post-consumer waste
Paper products that have been used by the end consumer and then diverted from landfills are post-consumer waste. As it reuses something that would otherwise be garbage, PCW is more environmentally friendly than pre-consumer waste, which are the recycled by-products that never reach consumers, such as mill broke or unsold magazines.

PEFC: Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification
A group of independent national forest certification organizations from over 33 countries around the world.

Old Growth Forests
Forestlands that have undergone a natural progress of succession, without significant human intervention, until they are comprised primarily of a dominant species of tree.

SFI: Sustainable Forestry Initiative
The program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. SFI program participants practice sustainable forestry on all lands they manage, and influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs.

SmartWood
A nonprofit environmental organization whose purpose is to improve the effectiveness of sustainable forestry in conserving biodiversity and providing equity for local communities, fair treatment to workers and creating incentives for businesses so that they can benefit economically from responsible forestry practices.

TCF: Totally Chlorine Free
CFPA’s mark for paper made from 100% virgin fi bre, including alternative, that is unbleached or non-chlorine bleached. Recycled papers can’t be TCF as the fiber source can’t be determined.

U.S. EPA’s Green Power Partnership
Indicates that the mill is buying green power to reduce the environmental impacts associated with its purchased electricity use. Green power includes eligible and nonpolluting renewable power sources, such as wind, solar, biomass, biogas, geothermal and low-impact hydroelectricity.

The Rainforest Alliance
Environmental group that works to protect ecosystems by transforming business and land-use practices, as well as consumer behaviour. Its SmartWood program is a world leader in developing solutions for worldwide forestry issues.

Wind Energy
Electric energy that is produced by wind turbines.
